I’m a little over ten hours of practice into learning to use my lathe. To tell the truth, I don’t think I will need the full twenty hours I’d planned. Already I can do most of what I need to be able to do to cut wheels.
Wrecking my only Proto:87 form tool would make for a bad day, and so, I ground a tool that looks kind of like it for practice. I was aiming for something like a code 88 profile, but may as well have been aiming for a randomness.
While the resulting parts do look vaguely like small wheels, there was a whole bunch of chatter, which gives that segmented look to the tyres in the photo. After reading more, I think I should have reduced speed rather than increasing it. If that doesn’t work, I might try honing the tool.
Yup, reducing speed helped a lot.
