I was just about to start sheathing the boiler. It’s important to get the wagon top over the firebox right if the boiler is to fit the front of the cab at all. So, I had the Cricut cut out a template for the formers. It was then that i discovered the boiler was too low compared with the running boards. Indeed, checking it with a stack of feeler gauges revealed the error was as much as 1.5 mm!
I toyed only briefly with the idea of leaving it. Then I realized not only would it fail to capture the look of the prototype, but also the cylinder saddle would be too high. So, into the epoxy-softening acetone bath it went to be returned to its component pieces.
One step forward, two steps back, again!
The real modeller’s life. I appreciate that the whole journey and the decision to persevere with the vision makes it into your blogs. Go acetone!
Thanks Rob, I’m glad you get some enjoyment from it. I was amazed how good this bond was after curing for most of a year!
All I can add is, speaking as a former submarine electrician, take care to protect yourself from these kinds of chemicals. Our chemical of choice was trichlorethylene, and cancer was a common amongst us.
Thanks Richard. I use it in the smallest quantities I can!
