Percy’s new Body

I’m as surprised as anyone that the single-big-print approach worked for Percy’s body. It looks pretty darn nice considering how much work didn’t go into it. I’m especially impressed by the hand-holds beside the cab door and the handrail stanchions atop the tank.

I had a few failures, which I blame on dirt I noticed on the FEP sheet interfering with the lightest supports. This resulted in some curling in the bottom of the coal bunker, a half printed step and two half-printed brake cylinders. Rather than print it all again, I just fixed the problems. They won’t be too noticeable, I think.

The cylinders came out too high, but probably nobody will notice because they’ll be too busy remarking at their engorged size.

The piping for the air pump didn’t really work due to the dirty FEP sheet. However, that was a separate part to facilitate painting. I’ve not finished designing the roof, so another round of 3D printing is in store, and I will clean the FEP sheet this time.

  1. Update: it turns out those too-high cylinders caused the main rods to foul against the crosshead guides. Correcting them will make the proportions of the model match the prototype better; a re-print is coming…
