Like just about every other hobby, with the possible exception of needlecraft, the electronics hobby is a subset of model railroading. I’m new to this part of the hobby, but fortunately I waited long enough that amazingly complex projects are within reach of people with nothing more than a winning attitude and access to the Internet.
Parts for the water tower and an upcoming steam throttle have been trickling in for the past few weeks, and it’s high time I got something working. So, an ancient laptop, running Ubuntu has dropped into the realm usually reserved for styrene, card and wood. A couple of tutorials later, and I have a blinking LED and some text going to the screen.
Don’t worry: the trains will be back.
