With my VanRail open house almost upon me, I’m racing to get a little more scenery presentable. Now, what to do about the gaps in the scenery caused by my preference for modular construction?
The big gaps were easy to fill with some ground goop, but there are some smaller cracks that also need filling, and one in particular is mere millimetres from the cattle pens, but over two feet from the edge of the layout. Ground goop is as imprecise as a blaster, and I needed something more refined, like a lightsaber (sorry, just watched Rogue One again).
As I’ve been spending time at Rona for household projects these past few weekends, I had occasion to walk down the glues and adhesives aisle. There I came across this wood filler product from Lepage. It is pre-coloured, which is a benefit over white, even if it doesn’t match the surrounding ground.
More important, though, is the delivery. The plastic tube can place the filler right where it is needed, and a painting knife or a finger can smooth it into place. It’s going to get grass planted upon it, for the most part, and so a little cracking won’t be noticeable. I even used it to fill in the cracks between ties, smoothing the putty out with a small screwdriver.

Scenery looking good. Thanks for the tip on the walnut coloured Lepages wood filler. Wet mud on a damp day.
