With two weeks away from the modelling desk, hobby time went virtual. Rather than try to modify the first version of the coal car, I started from scratch to build a car that is more hopper-like, with the brake cylinder mounted beneath the side sill. Wooden hoppers had their stakes spaced closer together where the load was deepest, and further apart at the ends where the load was shallower. The one photo we have of these cars seems to imply that some stakes were doubled, and while drawing them, I discovered this might have had something to do with the way the frame was constructed. Perhaps the stakes are tied to the frame at these locations.
Unlike version one, I elected to break this model into multiple parts. The body and frame are separate to help get weight beneath the slope sheets. The hopper doors then also became separate parts to allow the body to separate from the frame.
