Turnout Details

Who even remembers what I was thinking back in the day when I laid these turnouts? I unfortunately wrote little on the plans for detailing the turnouts back when I was designing and installing them in 2013. There is one note on tie placement, and that’s about all I could find, other than a ridiculous goal to have operating sessions as soon as September 2015!

So, we’re back to reviewing primary sources again. The blog post on tie placement, along with a 1941 AREA drawing I found in my collection give me a hint about where to locate the heal and toe of each frog. The toe should be on a tie about 4’8.5″ before the point of the frog, while the heal should be on a tie about 7’3.5″ after the point.

It looks like I had planned to represent the switch points as the not reinforced variety, and the frogs are built up (even though alternatives like manganese inserts were already available). For the frog, this drawing from the 1908 ARE&MOWA proceedings informs the placement of bolt heads, even though it is for a number 8, rather than a number 7.

The guard rails each get, I believe two rail braces inside and out, based on a photo on page 114 of Iain MacKay’s book.
