This weekend was the Railway Modellers’ Meet of BC, our annual divisional meet here in BC. As chair of the organizing committee, I had the opportunity to fill in for a cancellation in the clinic line-up, and supported the new recruiter for table-top clinics (soon to be renamed “demonstrations” I think) with a demo as well. The two, along with getting 1120 display-ready, used up every moment of spare time over the past few weeks.
My demo about using the Cricut required a completely new model as I’ve not actually used it in months and months. I’ll have a blog post or two about the new model under way soon. Ultimately, I needn’t have bothered, as it turned out to be more of a question and answer session than a demonstration. With a small crowd looking over my shoulder, we experimented with various designs to make N-scale novelty siding with individual boards. Despite the lack of actual model progress, everyone seemed to get their questions answered.
I filled the last clinic slot of the day, when many folks are heading for the highway or the ferry, with a new clinic “The Home Wheelwright.” This summarized my experiences with Percy in 2021. There were over a dozen in the audience, which is about a dozen more than I expected, given I was up against Marc Simpson, who was talking about covered hoppers. However, the twelve in attendance were high-quality: they asked so many questions, we went over-time.
For me, the meet is less about the content, and more about meeting people. I spend the whole weekend talking to modellers, and I was delighted to see so many new faces this year. Next year, BC is hosting the PNR regional meet, so we’ll have an even bigger and better program. You should definitely come.
