Prototype Modelling for Cattle

It kind of started as a joke: why not model individual cows for my pasture? It didn’t take long to find a couple of dozen photos of Ayrshire cattle, but the prospect of reproducing them in HO scale would be ridiculous, wouldn’t it? I was laughing at myself for even thinking of this idea.

Well, I started, and after a few animals I realized this was actually a great idea. There is no way I would have come up with all the variety of shapes and patterns on display amongst the photos I found. At the same time, they are all very real-looking because they’re based on reality.

  1. Instead of counting rivets you’re counting patches. Sure takes prototype modeling to the extreme…

Bring those cows to the next RPM meet and I’m sure you’d find that one person who knows cattle and says “well, in fact…” 😂

Did you ever decide to selectively compress the cows based on location?

  2. Hi Craig,
There are enough problems (and people are already pointing them out!) with this herd that I wouldn’t dare bring them to an RPM meet! Besides, they’re going to be stuck down once they’re dry, and that will be that.
Thanks to you, I did compress about a quarter of the animals for a second tier. Numbers 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are 92.5% of the size of the rest of the herd.

  3. These are amazing! What a cool detail to print out at home. Of course, now I have a Corb Lund song rolling through my head.
