The Herd are out to Pasture

I didn’t quite finish them ahead of the visit from the North Shore model railroaders on Wednesday evening. However now that the herd have been installed in the field, I’m delighted with the way they turned out.

Thanks to Craig Townsend, I made six cows 7.5% smaller than the rest to form the more distant part of the herd. The difference is barely discernible without holding one cow up against another. This lead to some hilarity and the discovery that they can indeed be pulled up without wrecking the field too much.

To make sure the cattle stood up straight, I made two frogs out of music wire and fishing weights to push down on their backs. Then I glued the animals down with gap-filling CA. I left each pair for about thirty minutes while the glue set and I did other stuff. They’re reasonably solid now.

  1. With all those critters eat’n all that grass, I wonder if the field and the path are a little bit clean, and missing an authentic detail . . .

The scene looks very nice. Who’s going to be looking at the trains?

  2. Glad I could contribute in some way!

Maybe someday I’ll make it up north to the other side of the border and see these cows in person. 😛

  3. I have so completely enjoyed each stage of this work. This is so cool.

(Also, I can’t unsee that War Of The Worlds-Pembroke edition mash-up now you’ve suggested it)

  4. Pasture, Fence, cows – all looks great!

One nit – I see you’ve correctly captured the “just about every cow facing the same way” look I’ve seen in almost every pasture I’ve studied. But there always seems to be one or two cows off by themselves facing the opposite direction!!!
