Finishing the Cattle Chutes

The Railway Modellers Meet is approaching, and it’s time to finish some of these projects so I can bring them to the display. There was almost nothing left to do to the cattle chute module except decide what to do about the end of track. After perusing my collection of Canada Atlantic photos, I concluded that the track was as likely to have nothing at the end as anything. However, that didn’t seem right, and so, I simply glued a tie across the rails and added bolts on either side of the rails to indicate how it was held in place. I painted the rail heads for the last few feet to indicate that nobody uses those rails anyway.

The grassy area around the cattle chutes was too uniform, and so, I mostly followed Gordon Gravett’s excellent advice and hit it with some matte varnish and another layer of static grass. I also added some ground foam and even a scattering of Woodland Scenics “flowers,” which come out looking a little like multi-coloured dandruff. The second layer of static grass included some “Straw” coloured fibres, and I don’t think I’ll do that again, especially since a lot of the fibres failed to stand up, even when coaxed with the Shop Vac.

Well, we could go on playing with this forever, but it’s time to move on. So here are some final photos of the overall scene.

    1. Thank-you Chris. I’ve been meaning to post about the boy and the dog, but the boy is a little too big due to the forced perspective of the fence. So, I’m looking for a replacement…
